Free Ride Fridays!!

Starting Friday July 1 we will be offering Free Ride Fridays to current clients from 2-3PM for $25. To be eligible the student must pass a test that shows they can catch horses, brush, tack-up, un-tack, mount and dismount, adjust stirrups, and walk/trot on their own. The horses available will be listed on the marker board weekly and will be on a first come first serve basis. We must be notified weekly if you are going to participate. Jumping horses is not allowed. Parents will be required to stay while students ride. Cancellation of Free Ride Fridays on certain dates at our discretion.

The session will run for 8 weeks and meet on Thursdays from 4-6 with Thursday May 26th being the last meeting. We will not meet for team on April 28th over spring break. Mack Hill Winter Equestrian Team

Winter Team will start December 2, 2010 and run for nine weeks with the last session on January 27, 2011. Meetings will run from 4PM-6PM on Thursdays with the time split between unmounted knowledge and mounted ride time. This nine week session will not have try-outs so be here on the 2nd in your riding pants, belt, polo shirt tucked in, warm jacket, gloves, boots, and hair neatly in a hair net ready to learn!! The cost of this session of team is $380

Mack Hill Riding Academy's 2010 Summer Camp Dates

Summer is almost here!!! Camp will run 3 weeks throughout the summer this year with the addition of 2 overnight advanced jumping camp sessions:

Week 1- June 28-July 2
Week 2- July 12-16
Week 3- August 9-13
open to beginners with no horse experience to advanced riders ages 7-17

This year we will be holding 2 overnight advanced jumping camps:
July 21-23
August 16-18
To be eligible for advanced camp the student must be able to walk, trot, canter, and jump a course of 2'3" or higher.

Camp Cost: $425
Spots fill fast so sign up early! We require a $200 deposit to hold the campers spot, and the remaining $225 is due the first day of camp. We will refund your deposit up to 2 weeks before the start of camp after that their will be no refunds.

Mack Hill Riding Academy is offering a Refer a Friend promotion which is running December 1st through February 1st. How it works is if a current Mack Hill student refers a friend to sign up for lessons and the referred friend purchases a lesson punch card 6 pack or 12 pack the current student will earn a 1 hour supervised free ride time. For students that are interested they can get a form at the barn, fill it out and return it to the office in the barn. If you have questions about the promotion please ask Megan!

Furnace Brook shows

This summer, our students did really well at the Monadnock Show Series shows held at Furnace Brook Farm. One more to go the end of October, the finals. Then the awards banquet!!!
Those who didn't show and came to help were awesome and much needed. Everyone brought food for the "groaning board" and we had a lot of fun and got a lot of ribbons!

The school year is just days away and that means it's time to transition to our school year lesson schedule. We have instructors available seven days a week. Please contact the barn or your instructor to set up your school year lesson time.

Just a reminder to all private lesson takers: Private lessons are 30 minutes long, so that means you need to arrive to the barn 15 minutes before your lesson is scheduled to start too brush and tack-up your horse. If you are not here early that means less time in the saddle, so please be sure to get to the barn 15 minutes early! And remeber group lessons are an hour long and if you are interested in changing to group lessons let your instructor know.

Mack Hill Riding Academy is excited to announce our fall barn horse show to be held at Mack Hill Monday Columbus Day October 12th. It will be a fun day with classes for everyone. All students are invited to attend. And for parents who would like to participate we will be looking for volunteers to help with the food booth, secretary's booth, announcing, and ring steward.

Oscar drives

Tuesday night, Torey Brooks wanted to do something different in her lesson. She asked to ride Oscar. Then we came up with the idea to test what Miki and Gabe have thought for months. Lets see if he drives. We tried the Dolly harness but there were too many pieces missing and it wouldnt work. So, Gabe said, "Let's try Bailey's old harness." With much hole punching and adjusting we got it to "kindof" fit. Oscar stood like a champ as we punched and pulled. He was having so much fun with all the attention he kept licking Gabes pants. Finally we got him somewhat set up and Miki long lined him around the ring. He was awesome. When she told him to trot, the little guy got right at it, when she told him to walk, he got right at that. Next, Torey and Erin pulled the cart after him, no reaction. So the next time around they held the shafts in the keepers and Gabe headed him up. "What is with these people?" Oscar seemed to ask. It is obvious that this little guy not only knows how to drive, but loves it. We did not however put the traces on so we don't know how he will react to the pulling of a human. But we have made a start, and Oscar I am sure will be a project for the campers and will be driving to Moultons very soon!

The rain showers during the middle of the day did not dampen anyone's spirit. When the day end awards where announced, it was full of Souhegan Riders. Out to Pasture....

So one of the benefits of giving the front field its annual spring time rest...... its a great place to ride. For the past month, our riders and trainers have been using the hills in the front field not just for a mini trail ride but to build the hind end of the herd for show season. The quarter horse got its name for its incredible speed in a quarter mile race. The speed comes from the strength of its hind end. Working them on the hills gives them that beefy and strong look that is so typical for the breed. And it a lot of fun too.

Blue skies, green grass, come on, think it with me! Even though it is winter out, it isn't too early to plan your summer! Mack Hill's ever popular summer camps have been scheduled. The three sessions will be as follows:

Session 1: June 29 - July 3; 9am -3pm

Session 2: July 13 - July 17; 9am -3pm

Session 3: August 10 - August 14, 9am -3pm

Camp will include a daily riding lesson, un-mouted instruction and pool time weather permitting.

A $200 deposit is required to hold your place. The balance of $225 is due no later than the first day of camp.

Game on! Broom ball is a smash!

Mercy's Saturday morning riding lesson took a break from the usual and tried their hands at broom ball on horse back. It was a success. After desensitizing their horses to the brooms and ball, the riders did a little moving of the ball down and back the length of the arena. Barb McCosh and Emily Stone were made team captains. Mercy got on a horse to even out the teams, three and three. It is not recommended to play this babreback, notes Mercy.

Barb had Katio O'Connell and Ally Martin on her team and Emily had Mercy and Mae Johnson. They scrimmaged for about 20 minutes and the final score was 3 to 2, Barb's team won.

It was really fun and we were chatting about making this something we do more often! Who's up for it?

Axe to the Equestrian Tax

Today the New Hampshire horse community showed up in force at the Legislative Office Building in Concord to oppose House Bill 427. During the hearing before the House Committee charged with investigating the Bill, its sponsor-- Representative Skinner-- effectively withdrew the Bill from consideration. Specifically, she asked the Committee to declare that the Bill was "Inexpedient to Legislate." Informally, several Representatives were heard to say that the Bill was going nowhere. The Chairwoman of the Committee indicated that the horse community had effectively communicated their concerns which were heard loud and clear by House members.

New Hampshire Legislature Considers Annual License and Registration Fee for Horses-- YIKES

Attention all horse owners or boarding facilities. The New Hampshire Legislature is considering a new law that will affect all of us in a negative way. In general terms, each horse would need a license for an annual license fee of $25. Proof of rabies vaccination is required before the annual license can be obtained. The program will be adminstered in the town in which the horse resides.

I believe this will be first step that will empower local towns to take further adverse action against horse ownership. Many towns already are hostile to horse owners and this will provide tools to the municipality to take further action or impose further regulation and restiction. My wife and I oppose this and plan to contact our Senator and Representative to let them know.

Holiday Vacation Camp at Mack Hill

Nothing to do over the break this month? Mack Hill is offering half-day camps Monday through Wednesday December 29-31. The cost is $60 per day. The hours will be 10am until 2pm. Riders are to bring their own lunch.

These camps will cover lessons on the horse as well as off. Be ready to enhance your horse knowledge with our enthusiastic Mack Hill Instructors. Sign up at the barn. Space is limited and first come is first served!

The Souhegan Riders riding team will have an off-season term beginning this Thursday December 4th through January 29th.

The cost for this term is $300 and the team will meet form 4pm until 6pm. There wil be no practice on December 25th and January 1st.

This term will focus on un-mounted topics and lessons like anatomy and confirmation, equipment use and fit, and lungin. There will be a field trip to an equine veterinary facility.

Double Clear Farm Jumping Show

The Souhegan Riders equestrian team competed today at the Double Clear Farm Jumping Show in Warner, NH. All of the practice this year paid off with a lot of top finishers. This was a challenging course with a lot of intentionally "scary" things. Yet our horses with their great riders rose to the challenge. Krista Albright gave us all a scare with her hard fall off of Waldo. We are pleased to report that she is doing well with nothing broken and nothing damaged (except her helmet-- which is why you always should wear one). And her smile is as big as ever.

Mack Hill Fall Show 2008 is a Huge Hit

The Mack Hill students really put on a show for all of the spectators today. Through 20 classes, the students competed with their best efforts. And was it impressive. Look Who Is Learning To Jump... QT

Our western pleasure star-- Just Call Me QT ("QT")-- is on to new things. This dead broke push button Palomino Quarter Horse was showing signs of boredom with his regular routine. So, we tried something new. Hitting the rails. Much to our surprise, he is a willing jumper who is eager to please and learn. While it may be true that old dogs don't learn new tricks, this horse is. Stay tuned for updated on how he progresses.

Meet Fox Brook Boarders Jess and Jay

Jess and Jay have been together for about 6 months now and have come a long way together. Jay was primarily a western trail horse from Florida when we met him but we fell in love with his “goofy” personality. He is a sweet natured horse with a little bit of attitude when we ask him to work on his dressage. You can see them weekly walking Jay over from Foxbrook to Mack Hill for our lessons.

It is that time of year again. With all the hard work our students have done, we finally have an opportunity for them to showcase it in a low-key horse show atmosphere in the coziness of our beloved Mack Hill Riding Academy.

The show will start at 10am with the jumping first followed by the flat classes and finally some fun classes. There will be food available for you to purchase as snacks and lunch.

We will need some volunteers for some admin work with the entries on the morning of the show and a handful of helpful folks to help run the food booth. We would certainly love to have one of your dishes available at the food booth so if you can help out, let Mercy know.

Follow the links to the class list and the entry form. There is a flat fee of $65 for the day which allows you to enter three classes of your choice. You are welcome to enter more at $5 each. The entries are due at the barn by October 9th to avoid a post-entry fee of $10.

Souhegan Riders Compete at Oak Rise Pleasure Show

The Souhegan Riders Equestrian Team competed at the Oak Rise Pleasure Show. Krista Albright and Katie O'Connell were awarded day end Champions in their divisions. Everyone on the team performed exceptionally well. A lot of hard work helped shape today's success. Special thanks to all of the parents and siblings who came to cheer on the team. I would call great "athletic supporters" but you might be wrong image.

Happy Birthday to Nora Zaveri (Coach Mercy's daughter) who celebrated her third birthday with the team today. The girls are better riders than they are singers.

Souhegan Riders Fall Term

Tryouts for the fall 2008 Souhegan Riders Competitive Equestrian team will be on Saturday September 6 at 4:00pm with Coach Mercy Zaveri. The fall team will be an 8 week Hunt/Jump term beginning on September 11 and ending October 30th. Practices will be on Thursday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30. The team will compete in the following two shows: Oak Rise Pleasure Show on September 21, 2008 and Schooling Jumper in Warner on October 19, 2008. The team will consist of a maximum of 12 riders. The cost for this term will be $425 which includes the 8 training sessions and horse uses and trailering to the two shows. Not included are the registration and class fees for each show. Especially those who attended the annual Manchester Office Outing at Mack Hill. We originally thought that lawyers and horses would not mix but.... (fill in your favorite punch line). I have just had the chance to look through all of the pictures and there are a ton of smiles in these shots.... so I'm thinking folks had fun. The best part of a day like this is to kick back, socialize and appreciate the truly special people (and their families) with whom we work. What a great group of people! You are all, well, winners!

Jilly May has just arrived from down south. She is a three year old blue roan registered paint from the bayou of Louisiana. She is an imprint foal which makes her very comfortable around people. Make sure you pay this little sweetheart a visit.

Saturday was the Souhegan Riders first show of the summer term and I must say that Coach Jess and I were very impressed with the girls performances both in and out of the show ring.

Friday night was a late one for all of the girls. The tunes were on as the horses were bathed, clipped, braided, and dressed in their glittery retro slinkies. No one left until it was dark and then managed to drag themselves out of bed and back to the barn before the sun was up the next morning.

All of the prep time and elbow grease truly paid off first thing Saturday morning when the girls walked into the ring (a first time experience for many) to be judged on their showmanship. Hannah Gagnon walked out of the ring with a third place after her English Walk-Trot division showmanship pattern. Amazingly, the girls were able to keep Princess looking as Fancy Schmancy as a white horse should. Jess Stepaneck also showed Princess for the day and tied with Amanda Giesinger and Just Call Me QT (QT) for a first place in showmanship in their Western Walk-Trot division. Lauren Weinstock and Blazing Into 2000 (Blaze) impressed, and shocked, us all by taking a second place in showmanship in their Junior English division. Go figure, a jumper turning into a calm and cool pattern horse almost overnight!

As if the girls' showmanship did not make Coach Jess and me proud enough, the girls hustled to get the horses ready for their riding classes. Hannah walked and trotted around that arena and you never would have known it was her first horse show; she placed in both her equitation and pleasure classes which had around ten exhibitors in each class. After a super quick tack change, Jess was able to take Princess into her western equitation and pleasure classes alongside Amanda and QT. Jess came out of the ring with a first place ribbon and Amanda was right up there, exiting with a second place ribbon. Again, you would never know that it was Amanda's first horse show! Lauren kept Blaze collected and in control and placed in her large equitation class.

The girls also had to compete in a trail class in order to qualify for day end awards. Again, Hannah and Princess came out on top placing fourth in their division. Lauren and Blaze placed second in their crowded canter division. To top off all of the trail excitement, Amanda and QT won the Western Walk-Trot trail class!

Lauren then took Blaze in two jumping classes where he was able to really shine. Lauren stepped on the gas and won her Junior Gambler's Choice class! Although they did impressed the heck out of us in their other classes throughout the day, we all concurred that Blaze should keep his day job as a hunter jumper! Hannah was also very determined in her Walk-Trot Hunter over Fences class and placed in it as well.

We anxiously awaited the announcement of the day end champions while the girls competed in a few gymkhana classes for fun after all of the main ring classes were over. QT was a crazy man when he saw the cloverleaf barrel pattern and speed paid off again for Blaze when he won the stake race.

The time came that we all had been waiting for and the day end champions were announced. Amanda and QT were day end Reserve Champions alongside of Jess and Princess who won the title of day end Champions.

Girls, we are so incredibly proud of you all. You made the day fun and exciting for everyone who watched you. If you were nervous at all, you definitely didn't show it. You all worked hard and competed at your very best. Again we are so very, very, extremely proud of all four of you that competed and worked together, helping each other throughout the day and night before. We can't wait for our show next Sunday!

Mack Hill had another terrific showing at Oakrise Jumping Show today. The day was full of thrills and spills. This challenging course caused many problems for many horses and riders. Thankfully all of our riders and horses are doing well.

Mack Hill welcomes Sophisticated Impulse ("Liam")(Ridden here by working student Shanna). He is a a 16.2 hand 7 year old liver chestnut quarter horse. He is a cousin of Lee sharing Barpasser as a grandfather. Liam is a hunter under saddle with a long and low trot. He is a kind and gentle guy who has been learning to hit the fences. Fox Brook Bed and Breakfast to Reopen

Sue and Scott are pleased to announce that they are reopening the Fox Brook Bed and Breakfast and Horse Farm. Nestled along the banks of the Beaver Brook River and the Amherst Historic District, Fox Brook has a long history of providing lodging in Amherst. The Inn and Horse Farm has been for sale over the past year after Sue's parents-- who had most recently been running the Inn-- retired. The challenging economy, however, has not been helpful for a sale. Demand from prior guests of Fox Brook, however, remains strong. Indeed, for years people visiting family and friends in the Amherst area have enjoyed the unique hospitality and environs of Fox Brook. We hope to have the B&B open for business by Labor Day. Over the past several weeks, Sue has been refurnishing the Inn with antiques and Scott has been working on the grounds. We are also pleased that the farm will be home to horses as the stalls are being rented. Stay tuned for more details.

And they were all so darn well behaved. Thanks to the balloon patrol who worked with the horses all week with "scary parade things," they performed beautifully.

She Said Yes.....

Big news. Today Theresa's boyfriend Pete made a surprise visit to Mack Hill from Colorado (OK-- it was a surprise for Theresa. The rest of us knew he was coming). Upon his arrival and following a somewhat bewildered and confused greeting from Theresa, Pete popped down on one knee in the middle of the barn. As the adrenaline started to rush for all those in ear shot, he asked Theresa those magic words.... "will you marry me." Without hesitation, Theresa said to Pete, "I am late for a lesson now. Gotta go. You know how busy I am. Next time you should call in advance and let me know you are coming. Geez Louise."

(OK, that's not what she said but can't you just see her saying something like that?). In fact, Theresa said an emphatic YES to Pete's proposal. And there, among the many recent show ribbons, hay bales, loose tack and with the heavy oder of leather and manure wafting through the air, Pete and Theresa made a gi-normous (combination of gigantic and enormous) step toward spending the rest of their lives together. And we all hope that the manure they had to deal with today is the most that they encounter in their exciting new journey together. Congratulations you two.

Jumping to the Moon at Oakrise

Well the Oakrise Jumping Schooling Show was a huge hit. Everyone stepped up and did something new and different. Krista got Waldo to confront the evil green jump. Katie-- a day end Champion and Reserve Champion-- got Chexy to jump two feet (who knew?) Anna-- our day end Champion--showed us that she is now ready to be a jockey at the Kentucky Derby. Shanna-- a day end Reserve Champion-- had Cannoli soaring like never before. And Coach Mercy put on a clinic of her own jumping Cash and Treyburn and won a day end Champion and Reserve Champion for her efforts. Lauren was one gigantic cheering section. Molly gave us all a scare with her fall off of big Trey. They are picture perfect pair so we look forward to you next outing on him. And don't scare us like that again......

Despite Mother Nature's efforts to wash away the week, the Mack Hill Campers persevered. Oak Rise Gymkhana

Even though we only had a few competeing today at the Oak Rise Gymkhana Show it was a fun filled day! The day was filled with smiles and ribbons!

Sue rocked the first half of the day in the W/T division, ribboning in Speed Barrels, Keyhole, and Dash. Unfortunately her day came to an abrupt end when she hurt her knee. We hope you feel better soon Sue!!

Katie started out the day in W/T but had a need for speed and moved up to the 13 and under division. Her and Chexy raced through keyhole, dash, speed barrels, and cloverleaf barrels, taking ribbons in most.

After Sue left I managed to get Toby in a cloverleaf barrel class where we took 5th out of 12. Needless to say I dont think he has a career as a gymkhana horse ahead of him.

Congrats to our friend Leanne for getting reserve for the day in the rookie horse division. And thanks to Lauren Face and her father for coming out to support everyone!

First off, it is a good thing I have waited until the next morning to gush about the team. This entry would have been twice as long had I written it when I got home.

I am so very proud of the Souhegan Riders. You all did an outstanding job. We ended up bringing home a mess of great ribbons, but most importantly, everyone rode at their very best. Some rode better than I had ever seen!

I have to admit, I was taken down memory lane as the bathing and braiding crew got to work on Saturday afternoon. The silliness increased as the hours wore on and I had a blast chit-chatting with the girls as we got everything prepared.

We have promising braiders coming along. Mae, Kelli and Katie did a super job with their first horse show braids. Erin and Ally M went to town with the clippers and Allie W bathed until she could bathe no more!

The early birds, Anna, Alicia, Ally M, Julia, And Emily helped get us loaded up and out the door. Assistant Coach Mollie came early too. She wasn't there to help the night before because she was GRADUATING!! Congrats Mollie.

Once at he show, it was smooth sailing as all the riders worked in pairs to get themselves ready and help one another out. The horses were all very well behaved and there was no mischief at the trailer... at least from the horses!

I'd like to say, "Yeah for hainets!" We had everyone all tucked in and only a few hairs poked out on anyone. I threatened to cut off stray hairs and they all disappeared.

Poor Erin cleaned tack and clipped horses the day before, and was unable to finish her day in the saddle as her hip was killing her from a previous fall. We missed you and hope you are better soon!

I cannot say enough how proud I was that everyone, parents and all, had great supportive attitudes for the entire day. We had a massive cheering crowd. Our huge banner and matching saddle pads were done right by everyone's turn-out, rides and sportsmanship. I imagine we turned a head or two for good reasons!

I know how thrilling it is to win a ribbon, and a blue one at that. Even if the judge didn't think your particular ride was stellar, know that I thought every one of you rode your very best and you were kind to your horses, teammates, and parents. Thank you for that. You are on your way in your horse careers.

The O'Connells have gone above and beyond in their support of the team. We are so very lucky to have owners who care and want to provide for us the way they do. Endless thanks to them.

Our hospitality tent was a great treat. So too were the coolers full of drinks and piles of snacks. Next time, I will be sure to assign a very important food group for the horse shows: chocolate!

I cannot wait to praise you all in person on Thursday for our "fun" ride. I know you may not think you can have too much fun with me watching, but I will try to let loose a bit!

I really am tickled with pride. Good work everyone.

Oak Rise Provides a Rainbow of Colors for the Souhegan Riders

The Souhegan Riders had tremendous success today at the Oak Rise Equestrian Show in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Every member of the team gave 110% percent for a terrific team showing. Individually, most of the ribbons earned were in First, Second or Third place. All of the practice and primping of the horses paid off!

While we are proud of everyone who competed today, we are especially pleased that many of our riders won Champion or Reserve Champion for their overall performance.

Three Mack Hill Riders participated in the Apple Valley show in Fremont, New Hampshire this past Sunday and all three brought home blue ribbons. Congratulations to Jess Stepanack on getting her first blue ribbon on Tucker in Western Pleasure and several red ribbons as well!! Tucker performed well in both his English and Western classes under Jess' careful guidance. Katie O'Connell also took home a blue on Chex Away and several red ribbons as well. Chexy just can't be beaten in the trail class!! Toby was a complete gentleman for barn owner, Sue O'Connell, who brought home several blue ribbons for the day. Summer Riding Team

Calling all competitive riders. The Souhegan Riders summer term is approaching. This session will be coached by instructor-- and new mom-- Jess Ellia. Both Hunt Seat and Western Pleasure Riders will be accepted on the team.The program will run for 8 weeks from July 10 to August 28, 2008. Team practices will be on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30. The team is open to riders between the ages of 11 to 17. All riders, including those in the Spring Session, will need to try out for Coach Jess.

The cost for this term will be $400. This includes all of the practice/training sessions with Coach Jess as well as the trailering and use of a Mack Hill horse at two shows at which the team will compete. Riders are responsible for the cost of their own registration and class fees for each show (generally around $60 per show).

Today, the Mack Hill Riders had great success at the Oakrise Farm Pleasure Show series in Goffstown, NH. The Souhegan Riders will be competing at this venue later in June and we wanted to get some real-time experience at the farm. Congratulations to Coach Mercy Zaveri who won Champion on Cash in the Green Horse division. This was only young Cash's second show and he really showed that he is ready to compete. Katie O'Connell was Reserve Champion on Chex Away ("Chexy") in the walk trot division which had 22 competitors. Shanna Barrow rode Blue Suede Shoes ("Elvis") in his first show and placed second in the hunter hack class. Special thanks to Liz Rose, Neelan Zaveri, Nora Zaveri and Prenav Zaveri for helping all of the riders all day long. Congratulations to all of you. On to the Apple Valley Show next week.

Congratulations to the Mack Hill Riders who competed in the NHQHA May 2008 Novice Show in Dover, NH. Sue O'Connell earned High Point Champion in the AQHA Division. She earned High Point Reserve Champion in the Open Division. Katie O'Connell earned High Point Reserve Champion in the Open Division. Shanna Barrow and Anna Foster earned first places in their jumping class. Jess Stepenak got the thrill of the day flying through the barrels and poles on Tucker. Lauren Smith made Chip look like a Champion even though the judge did not agree. Special Thanks to Coach Mercy for her support. And a huge thank you to Lauren's boyfirend Ian and her dad Brian for tireless help all day long.

If you haven't checked out the pictures that Scott has taken, get to it! It is a great learning tool for you to look at your position while on the horse... especially over fences.

There are a bunch of you jumping ahead of the horse. If you don't know what it looks like, look for someone who is standing forward in the saddle with their crotch over or in front of the pommel of the saddle, while the horse is about to leave the ground. This is dangerous as you could go flying over the ears if they stop suddenly in front of the jump.

Look too, for a good release of the horse's head in the air. These horses are saints for continuing to jump while their heads are being held back by the rider. If I was a horse, I would quit jumping! Special pats for the good horses who are teaching you to jump.

Instructors would be more than happy to discuss your position with you. You can learn so much!

Mack Hill welcomes Fancy S'mancy a/k/a "Princess" who is on trial at Mack Hill for the next two weeks. She is 16.2 hands and double registered as a Paint and Pinto. She is 11 years old and ready to start jumping. Her owner bought her from Townsends Training Farm and showed her in both English and Western classes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Those who have ridden her already say that she "floats" through her gaits and is a very comfortable ride. And she is a looker...

What Color is Chexy?

Many have asked "what color is Chexy?" Well, the answer is grulla (or sometimes spelled grullo). Grulla, which is pronounced "grew-ya", has the following characteristics. The body is slate colored (bluish gray as the blue heron) from light blue gray to brown-ish shade. Points and dun factor markings are black. A dorsal stripe is required. The word grulla is Spanish and I am told translates in English to "crane." Indeed, when Chexy gets a bath, his blue coloring shines through. Some have stated that the grulla coloring is the rarest of all horse body coat colors. Chexy seems to know this by the way he proudly prances around the show ring like he is "somethin' else." What a ham.

"Cash" Check or Charge...

"Cash" is a 7 year old 15.3 hand bay quarter horse. We brought him here to be an all around show horse for daughter Katie. She had different plans and has fallen back in love with Chexy. So Cash has become one of the stars for the Souhegan Riders team. Here, one of our working students, Liz from Massachusetts, is showing off Cash's long legs. He is another gem from Townsends Training Farm.

He Wants to "Blaze" a New Trail

Blazing into 2000, or "Blaze", is an 8 year old 16 hand red dun quarter horse. He has been part of the lesson program at Mack Hill since we opened. He is a forward mover with a real hunter style. Elvis is 4 1/2 year old Welsh pony cross. He stands at 14.1 but wants to jump to the sky. Given his young age, we are slowly building his jumping capabilities. Here, Cassie Farley of Amherst (top) and Alex Torcia of Bedford (bottom) is taking him through some jumps. He is a super cute mover and his colors make him a standout in the ring. We have high hopes for his prospects in the show ring.

He's Back.....

Mack Hill welcomes back our Clydesdale, Tommy. He is a 16.2 hand 11 year old behemoth of a horse. For the past several months he has been in Amish Country Pennsylvania learning how to be a road safe driving horse. His work down there is clear because he has returned a muscle bound buff stud (well, he is still a gelding)! One question: What happened to his tail? Those Amish are tough. Our thanks to our friends Kelly and Craig MacCorquodale who brought him safely to and from Pa for his training. Reports to follow as we see his driving skill first hand. Today will be the first practice for the Souhegan Riders Competetive Riding Team. I have been very busy getting things ready. Mollie and I have a game plan in place and we can't wait to give it a go. Thanks to Jess for having had this vision while we were at Fox Brook. With Scott and Sue's support and encouragement, we are making it happen! I will return to the blog to let everyone know how it went. Fingers crossed!

He is Really a Maverick

Maverick is a fantastic western pleasure horse and this is why we bought him. But not long after arriving, we learned that he likes to jump. Here, one of our working students Shanna from Milford is showing what he likes to do. He needs some work because he likes to jump pretty early but we are eyeing him as an All Around prospect. He is from Townsends Training Farm (like QT, Tucker, Cash, Caz, Champagne and Jasmine). He has all of the buttons necessary to win a lot of blue ribbons on the AQHA circuit this season. And on top of that, he is super cute and as sweet as they come. He will be a superstar before long.

This week, the very leaky roof on the indoor arena will be fixed. We know that the riders will miss being rained on indoors but all good things must come to an end. Workmen will be on site from 7 am to about 2:30. No lessons will be impacted but things will be a bit more untidy until this project is done.

I just went to see the show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, and it was great! Congrats to our Mack Hillers who where in the show and to Rita who produced it. I was jealous! Joseph is one of my favorite shows. I am still humming, "Go Go Go Joseph..."

Riders Janey and Matt Campbell, Rachel Fairfield, Shauna Sousa, and Katie O'Connell are cast members in the Amherst PTA production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which is running April 10 through 13, 2008 at Souhegan High School. Terrific job, you stars! Maybe you will sing some tunes for us on horseback. Congratulations to show producer Rita Piotrowski who has been with the Riding Academy from the day we opened.
